The San Bernardino Community College District will use a $3 million federal grant and $3 million in matching funds to rehab a pair of vacant buildings to serve as centers for the institution’s reentry and transitional employment and workforce training programs.

District officials expect the facilities to open in 2021.

The sites are on East Highland Avenue in northern San Bernardino and West Eighth Street downtown.

“This is a total investment of $6 million going into the community, training people for careers in coding, 3D printing and other areas of expertise,” district spokesman Angel Rodriguez said. “These facilities will give people closer access points in the community to get hands-on training for those types of jobs.”

Late last month, the U.S. Economic Development Administration awarded SBCCD $3 million to spur economic development in a federally-designated Opportunity Zone, an economically-distressed area identified as an “investment priority.”

The projects are expected to generate $120,000 in private investment and help revitalize the areas by inviting business development nearby.
