SBCCD Guidance on California’s New Regional Stay Home Order

The following message was sent by the San Bernardino Community College District to students, faculty, and staff on December 5, 2020.

Dear students, faculty, and staff:

Starting Monday, December 7, the San Bernardino Community College District, Crafton Hills College, and San Bernardino Valley College will observe California’s new Regional Stay Home Order.

What is happening?

COVID-19 cases continue to rise, and now, Southern California’s hospital system has less than 15% available intensive care unit (ICU) beds to treat individuals infected with the coronavirus. Public health officials urge us to observe the new Regional Stay Home Order to save lives.

How long is the new Regional Stay Home Order in effect?

The order will remain in effect for at least 3 weeks and, after that period, will be lifted when our region’s projected ICU capacity meets or exceeds 15%. Learn more at

What does the new Regional Stay Home Order mean?

For at least 3 weeks, starting Monday, Dec. 7, it prohibits private gatherings of any size, closes operations except for critical infrastructure and retail, and requires 100% masking when leaving home. Physical distancing and reducing face-to-face exposure is important to slow the spread of COVID-19.

Everyone in California is required to stay home and stop non-essential activities from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. except:

  • To go to an essential job
  • Get necessary health care
  • Get food
  • Care for a relative or friend
  • If you go out, keep at least 6 feet of distance

If I am a student, what should I do now?

  • We encourage you to observe the new Regional Stay Home Order.
  • Please continue with your courses as recommended by your instructor.
  • Please remain off-campus, unless you are currently taking an approved physically distanced in-person/hybrid course.
  • We will hold most courses online/remotely in spring 2021. Make an appointment to meet virtually with a live counselor to get your questions answered and prepare for a successful semester ahead. Go to Crafton Hills Online Counseling or Valley College Online Counseling.
  • If you need health services, emotional support, emergency food, or housing resources, we are here to help you. Learn about the COVID-19 resources available to you at or

If I am a faculty or staff member, what should I do now?

  • We encourage you to observe the new Regional Stay Home Order.
  • If your supervisor has communicated with you to report to campus and perform an essential job, please continue to do so.
  • For all others who are working remotely, please obtain your supervisor’s approval before coming to campus or district offices.

There is nothing more important to us than your health and wellbeing.

With individual responsibility and shared sacrifice, we believe that there is light at the end of this tunnel. Thank you for doing everything you can to stop the spread of COVID-19 this winter season.
