The board of trustees has announced that the search for the 15th chancellor of the San Bernardino Community College District is officially underway. The appointment of SBCCD’s next chancellor will shape the district’s educational mission for years to come and the board is fully committed to conducting an equitable, inclusive, and transparent search process.

SBCCD has become a top-performing district in terms of student success, fiscal stability, competitive salaries, new facilities and most notably, The Free College Promise, which provides two years of free tuition and textbooks to local full-time students.

“Our district is in the strongest position in its nearly 100-year history and our next chancellor will be at the helm of our most transformative time yet,” said Board of Trustees Chair, Dr. Anne L. Viricel. “The process to search for and select our chancellor must be thoughtful, transparent, collaborative, inclusive, and thorough.”

Recruitment efforts will involve an open, comprehensive, national search, seeking qualified candidates from all regions of the state and country.

The board has hired the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) to recruit competitive candidates and assist with the search process, and will be appointing a search committee of staff, faculty, students, and alumni representatives.

Public Forums

On Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5, the district will host four public forums to gather input about the qualities, characteristics, and qualifications the SBCCD community is seeking in its next chancellor, and to discuss the opportunities and challenges facing the district now and in the future. The feedback collected will be used to help guide recruitment activities over the next several months.

Open Letter from SBCCD Board Chair, Dr. Anne L. Viricel

February 21, 2020

Dear students, faculty, staff and friends:

The San Bernardino Community College District Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that we have begun the search for our next chancellor.

As our district approaches its first 100 years serving our community, the appointment of SBCCD’s 15th chancellor will shape our educational mission for years to come.

National Search For Our 15th Chancellor

The SBCCD Board of Trustees is fully committed to conducting an equitable, inclusive, and transparent national search.

We have selected the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT) to assist with the chancellor search process. ACCT’s assistance will include providing support, recruiting highly competitive candidates, working with the search committee and supporting the board.

ACCT has conducted over 500 community college searches and brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our process. ACCT’s mission is to strengthen community college governance through education, advocacy at local, state, and national levels, and comprehensive search services.

Dr. Bruce Leslie will serve as our ACCT search consultant and he will provide support and assistance throughout the search process. Julie Golder, J.D., vice president of search services for ACCT will provide general oversight.

Our First Public Forums: An Inclusive and Participatory Process

An important step in the chancellor search process is the development of a chancellor profile. On Wednesday, March 4 and Thursday, March 5, we will host a total of four public forums.

The purpose of these sessions is to listen to your input, which will assist with the development of the chancellor profile. You are invited and encouraged to participate in a wide-ranging discussion about the qualities, characteristics, and qualifications we are seeking in our next chancellor, and the opportunities and challenges facing the district in the years to come. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about the chancellor search process.

Online Questionnaire: We Welcome Your Feedback

In addition to public forums, we have developed a short questionnaire that we hope you will complete. Your anonymous responses will be used to inform the development of the chancellor’s profile.

The survey is available here.

The Chancellor Search Committee and Candidate Forums

The Chancellor Search Committee will review the confidential applications, interview semifinalist candidates and identify the final candidates. The appointment of the committee will take place in the coming weeks and the next progress report will list the members of the committee.

The SBCCD Board of Trustees will interview the final candidates and all final candidates will participate in open forums. We anticipate the final candidates visiting the district in early June, and we will provide the exact dates, times and locations once they are confirmed.

You are invited to attend the public forums to meet and hear from the final candidates. At that time, we will provide you with feedback forms, which we will collect at the end of each forum and share with the board.

Recruitment Process

Our recruitment efforts will involve an open, comprehensive, national search, seeking qualified candidates from all regions of the state and country. ACCT specializes in one-to-one recruitment of community college leaders.

Additionally, to assist with this process, we will place digital and print advertisements in major publications and diverse media outlets.

Stay Updated: The Chancellor Search Webpage

In the next few weeks, we will launch a webpage for the chancellor search where you will find information on who will serve on the search committee, open forums, and recruitment progress reports.

If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact our ACCT search consultants:

Bruce Leslie, Ph.D., ACCT Search Consultant

Julie Golder, J.D., ACCT Vice President of Search Services

This is an exciting time in the life of the San Bernardino Community College District, and we look forward to your participation and input as we select our next chancellor.

Sincerely,
